Welcome back to the Lord Connom uses podcast. I'm Leslie. I'm Brittany. And I'm Nikki. And today we're super excited to dive into sealed format and talk about the cards. But before that, we can do the weekend update.
SPEAKER_01Whoop whoop. Actually, it was kind of a bummer of a weekend. I say as I whoop whooped. My dog got out. And so I spent most of my weekend, you know, or I guess not even most of my weekend. I spent the last half of my weekend at the vet and taking care of her. So I was planning on going to an Orlock on a tournament and ended up not doing that. So yeah, so we we went out on Saturday night and she got out as we left and we didn't notice. And she did the whole escape artist thing and she burned her paws on the pavement because it's very hot. And she I'm struggling with it now. Dogs are kind of like knees, so she has like basically some skin knees, but like they're also burnt. So like burnt and skin knees, you know? No. So she's walking around very tender footed right now. We're doing like medicine and paw care and all that stuff. And she has a cone of shame that we yeah we are trying not to have to have her wear as long as she's not licking her paws.
SPEAKER_03I mean, it's not funny that happened to your dog.
SPEAKER_01But the cone of shame does remind me of it does, it does, and it's very on it's on par. Yeah, the cone of she's wearing the cone of shame. I do not like the cone of shame.
SPEAKER_02So I did not play any Lorcana either this weekend. Just a lot of family stuff this weekend. It was meet the teacher night at my son's school on Friday. So he will start fifth grade tomorrow, which is just crazy that we start school in July here in the desert where kids can't go outside. But anyway, um, that was kind of an interesting evening, very quick, but we're excited to get this new school year started. And then just other family things. We went and played unlimited mini golf on Sunday over at Putt Shack, which was super fun. If you've never been, it's really cool because everything's computerized, so your ball keeps track of all your strokes and you know sinks.
SPEAKER_03You don't even have to turn it into a math activity for anything. That breaks my heart. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01For those of you that don't know, Leslie is a math nerd.
SPEAKER_03I used to be a high school math teacher.
SPEAKER_01She's still a math nerd, though.
SPEAKER_03I am still a math nerd.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't math, so you should make your son math. Yeah, I just don't help him with that. That's all Dave's stuff. No, I'll do writing stuff, but yeah, math. I could send him to you, huh? True.
SPEAKER_00I am a math tutor now.
SPEAKER_03So, you know. Anyways, for my weekend, we I don't even remember what we did on Saturday, but on Sunday, our local store, Recreations Games, has been doing a league. And if you show up to the league, you can enter into a tournament to win this really cool custom mat put on by a local player, Zach, who's amazing. And uh it was really fun. Chris won. Uh it'll be it's only been happening for three sets now. So he won the last set and then the set. So back to back. Me was there. I was there. I brought Blurple again because I was like, Blurple really made it for me last week, and then I did not show up. So that's okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, I was planning on going to that tournament. Yeah. Until that happened. Until until I spent most of Sunday at the vet. Yeah. Um yeah, I had planned on bringing Amethyst Steel Burn to kind of as its like last hurrah with Doc and all those locations, like with the seven dwarf mine and then all the burn cards too. So it was like a location burn aggro-esque thing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, there was a lot of so there was a lot of blurb ball, unsurprisingly, because our Arizona meta is full of blurbow players, honestly. And then toys, dogs, very like amber emerald variants. And I really didn't see much else. So basically it was just rural and amber amber emerald, either toys or dogs. That's fair. Yeah, it was it was an interesting last tournament of the pre-rotation sets.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, that's why I was trying, that's when I wanted to bring something different.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_01Which was my plan. I was like, oh, I'm gonna just bring something different so that it's you know a little last hurrah thing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and I I honestly was like, maybe I should bring something else. And but the week ended up getting crazy, and I just didn't have the energy to put together a different deck. Mr. Chris, on the other hand, was building like six decks and then taking them apart and rebuilding and taking them apart, changed with his hyper creative energy. Yeah, and then still last minute decided to change his deck again. Um, and he ended up on like the red blue deck, and that's what won for him. Red actions? It works, yeah. Red blue actions, and that there was another person there who was playing red blue actions, but they didn't make it to top four.
SPEAKER_01So gotcha. Yeah, no, it was a good, good last little run there. I heard people had a really good time. So funny. I did I I did do something Lorcana related to this weekend. I organized cards. Yeah, so I am fully ready, except for all the foils, because I I always like labels to like super less dark side. So I have so many foils that need to be organized. Oh, yeah, too. Like sets upon sets of foils that need to be organized because I just put them to the side. Because I'm like, I don't want them in my binder. Yeah. Except for when I want them in my binder, the foil binder, because they have their own binder. It's empty right now. But I have a I have a trope box full of foils. Yeah. Um unless I know they're tradable and then they go in the trade binder.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, we we luckily kicked it into gear this set and we organized everything like two weeks ago. I mean, that was a big endeavor. Yeah. But yeah, it's organizing is not fun, but very necessary, especially when you have somebody in the house, Chris, who builds decks left and right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Daryl and I were like, wait, how many of this card do we have? Wait, how many of this card do we have? Because we fully fully everything is out of out of deck boxes. Everything is put away except for those foils. And so everything is in binders or extra, extras or in extras trophies.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then we have our meta folders, which has the cards that we know will go back into decks.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, we had to take everything out that's going to be rotated out and put them into our infinity binder for like the infinity meta cards.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you're way more organized than I am. I threw everything in a box by name. Yeah, that's what I mean to well. Well, name and color.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I should say. Yeah, I would I would not be able to find anything with the amount of cards that we have. So I just been like, okay. So everything is organized by card number for every set.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Even in the trove boxes.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, see, we do like, I mean, we talked about this before, but we do by color just the name of the characters and then like sort it that way. Um, and because we normally, you know, we don't build c we don't build decks anymore just from like scratch. We'll go on, you know, one of the websites online and build a deck online and see what's legal and what's not, have the list and then pull the cards. And so having it by name for us is really easy because then we're like, oh, we're looking for a bell. And we just go to bell in this color and pull the character and that makes it easier to build decks. Yeah, that's fair. Yeah. But yeah. I would, but mostly because I would forget what binders things are in if I was organizing by your system. I'd be like, what binder in? Because you have like the competitive binder. You have the oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I know, I know where everything is. Oh yeah. See me that.
SPEAKER_02See, that's the thing. I mean, that's it.
SPEAKER_03You gotta find a system that works for you, okay?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, me exactly. Like, where did that card go?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, I mean I just have a system, like we check one binder first, and it's not in that binder, then I know it's so it's yeah. I everybody has their system, so I was just like it's it's it's always funny because we would be like, wait, how many binders do you have? It's too many. Yeah, but it's enough.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Our new our new binder just arrived right before I got here. Nice. So ready for the new set. I already have my uh little keychain that goes on it that it knows says attack of the vine on it. So that's ready to go to go on the binder. Nice. You're so organized. I try, I need to because my brain is not organized, so I need to organize, I need to create the system so that every so that stays in my approach is opposite.
SPEAKER_03I mean my brain's not organized, so I just live in the chaos.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So if I don't come at it with a systematic approach, then it's just gonna be chaos. Yeah. And then it won't be as fun because it won't be easy to find things.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'd get super frustrated if I didn't know where it is. Oh, yeah. I mean, I'm grateful for Chris because he is the one that keeps things organized for us because it would absolutely be chaos if it was me. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I guess I could say I didn't not do something like on it because I've started to build decks for the coming set. So that's been interesting. I'm really struggling right now, though, with this Emerald Steel location stack. I have too many cards and I can't figure out what to take out or what to, you know, what maybe I should not have four, maybe I should have two. So, but that's one I'm really interested in actually playing. So we'll see. Yeah. See where I go with it.
SPEAKER_03I'm curious what your approach to that, because some people are hard on like always have four copies of every card. Right. And then some people are like, you're like, you know, maybe have two or three, or some people are like, don't ever have a one of in your deck, you know, like that that kind of spread of philosophy when deck building. I'm definitely a I'm gonna go down to three. I'm gonna go down to three on like a lot of things. Yeah, like I for the seven drop uninkable Hades, I play the only three in my Glurple deck, and everyone's always like, You should be playing four. And I'm like, if I play four, I will draw four. So I will only play three. And it works out for me a lot of the times, but people are very flabbergasted when they see my list and it's not a four.
SPEAKER_01That's funny. Yeah, no, I mean I I used to be a hardcore four fifteen, right? Like that's that's how I would build. And I definitely don't play that way now. Yeah. But I I think I think our game is too adaptable for that to be like your heart full-offs. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I feel like when the earlier sets were out, four ofs did make sense because there weren't there were a limited number of viably or competitively viable cards, but now there's so many and like there's so many decks to kind of tech for, right? Like being more versatile is helpful in that regard.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, I I always people always are like shocked when they see I only run three of stuff. But I had that approach even before rotation, like with Rapunzel, the the five, was it five drop that healed three and draw drew three cards? Four, four drop. Okay, but yeah, I only played three of her because my philosophy was people will have to play around the fourth, and they did. Um, but I never had a fourth to draw. That's pretty good.
SPEAKER_01I like that. I it was like when I took Be Prepared out of my decks, people played around. People played around it, and I was like, I don't even have to worry about this or actually for most of this set I put or not most of a good portion of this set, I played the Maui Shark. Yeah, with no actions in my deck.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and just certain cards just make people play differently. Yeah. And so yeah, I really enjoyed doing that. I mean, it's a little bit of like the meta gaming, but yeah.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it's like keep them on their toes.
SPEAKER_01They always use the removal on him. If he's a removal on him, then Mrs. Incredible. Yeah, like I'd rather you do that. So I I I'll keep my, you know, more versatile Mrs. Incredible on the board if you're gonna get rid of my Maui shark. Go for it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So then leading into or taking that and leading into like how do you manage something like that during a sealed event? Because you don't consistently have four of three of us, right? What do you do? Well, use a system. Tell us about this system. Okay.
SPEAKER_01So as with most TCGs, we use an acronym BRED. And we've we have this on our Instagram page, and we we made one for a reign of Jafar, we made one for other sets as well. But Reign of Jafar, I think, is the first one that we actually like used and utilized a lot. But it basically stands for bodyguard or big booty. Then we have R, which is removal, E for evasive, A for actions or aggro, and then D for uh draw or dud. Um, you can also have B stand for bomb, as like it's more the traditional B for other like magic when you're doing draft. And so you use that acronym to kind of help you with the very basics of understanding like what types of cards you are looking for, and then you work your way from there with knowledge that the most common cards you're gonna find are commons and uncommons. You'll get a few rares, occasionally a super rare, and then almost never a legendary, but maybe you'll get one up if you're really lucky.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, I mean the pool the pull rates for the last set is high was higher and the same and supposedly the same for this set. And so I feel like there is a chance you might get a legendary, but you shouldn't go into a sealed event hoping for specific legendaries to build your deck around. It's the the thing I love about sealed is it is so dependent on what you pull, and so being able to adapt is really helpful in that regard. So if you do pull some legendaries, that's great, but I wouldn't build my deck around it essentially.
SPEAKER_01For sure. And I honestly a lot of the legendaries aren't as good and limited anyway. They're made they're made for more constructed.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and they're often too expensive.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Um, and so we kind of pulled a few cards we felt were good options for limited play. And uh, we always like look at the cards in terms of cost first and then from there. So we're gonna kind of go through a few of those. And this is just like our opinions from differing type of players, and like we'll give Kim some reasoning as to why we would pick those cards. And but by any means, this is not like a the end end all y'all deck deck plays, right? But this these are like some options for you if you're like not as good at playing limited or you're not quite sure what types of cards to pick. We'll give you some like reasoning as to why.
SPEAKER_03Well, and everybody has their different play style, right? So, like some people are just give me all the big questers, aggro, aggro out, get there as fast as I can. Uh, when I first started, I pulled all the evasives that I could because evasives are really hard to deal with. Same thing with things like resist. Um, in a limited format, those things are very hard to deal with, but everybody approaches things differently because I had varying success with that. And and then other people put in like big, big booties and and it works, you know. It depends on how fast or slow the set is as well. And mean by that is like tempo, right? If there's a lot of one drops that quest for a lot really fast, then you might not have time to get to those big bodies. But if it's slow enough that and like last set, there was some cards that ramped you in seal too, and so you were able to get to those bigger bodies. So it just depends on the set, too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, for sure. Because every yeah, every set has different things that are like going to be things that you're seeking out. Like last set, I was always looking for the Maudy character, so good in limited. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And Meriwether was yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And Merryweather I mean, she's a menace.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, too, but in sealed, she's a menace. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So just things that you like. I I play more toward the big body, big booty type cards because I want to be able to have some staying power on the board.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But I know others play with more of that lower to the ground aggro style. Yeah. So thinking about one drops, we have the one cost Mike Wazowski and Amber. When you play this character, you may pay two to give a chosen character one lore, one additional lore this turn. So I like this one not as a one-drop.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I was gonna say that.
SPEAKER_01So, like, this is a good because the problem with one drops is like they don't feel as good later in the game when you pull them in limited play. So I like the versatility of the one drop having the ability to be played later and have some, you know, viability. Yeah. So I wouldn't play him on one.
SPEAKER_03No, I wouldn't either. He's definitely something to help you finish a game because if you're going for the low to the ground strategy, you need something to finish out because the longer the game drags on, the worse it gets for you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So that that's why I would pick that card is it would be not as a one-drop. I know, yes, it's a one-drop, but not to play, not to play on one. Don't play it on curve like Olaf. You don't necessarily want to play it on one. Right. And then Hetrify, which is an exert chosen opposing character. I think exerting is such a crucial part of this game. And it's a one-cost action. It is unequable, but it is one of those things that I think is super important. Again, you won't play that on one. No. No. You won't have a character on one if you're doing choosing to do that.
SPEAKER_02Um, then yeah, bestie's a symbol, which is great because it helps you look through your deck. You can reveal a character card and put it into your hand, put the rest of your bottom of your deck in any order. So this is a really good way for you to search for your through your deck. Maybe you are looking for that big booty character at the time, or maybe you're looking to close out the game. You want to grab that mic. So I think it's a really good way to get yourself an extra card and look to see what you got.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, anything that helps you filter your deck is really good and limited because you never, it's there's not that consistency that you have in. And so being able to filter out cards for situational is really good. And then we have the Ruby Dash. I love this card. I think too, I said, you know, don't necessarily rely on having legendaries, but my hope is in one of my seals, I'll be able to draw this dash and then the shift dash or the shift dash in violet, because I feel like those cards are just so good. But having a one-one evasive right off the bat, it's just a really good thing to have. If I see him, I will be putting him in my decks.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I think that's kind of interesting because I have to think about limited in kind of a different way than I than I because I love draft. Draft is my favorite limited form.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And last set we didn't play draft at all because we had the pre-release kits. And I think that's a common thing that I'm seeing coming up again. So I have to start thinking of what am I going to be picking out of somebody else's hand, right? Like this is what is just in my packs. So that's it, it's a different strategy when you're playing fully sealed versus draft. Yeah. And so I am definitely like those would be gone by the time. Right. Um, and so I had to think I'm like, oh, it's already not in my hand. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But it's for the I like the pre-release kits. And and I also enjoy draft because you get to look at a lot of packs and a lot of variety. Um, but yeah, oftentimes you you get a good card and it's not there by the time it gets to you. No, it's not. But with the pre-release kits, I feel like these initially, or a lot of people who maybe not be so experienced with sealed events might be gravitating towards the pre-release kits. And so it's like, here's these cards you can choose from.
SPEAKER_01What do you pick out of them? For sure. And I and I definitely feel like they made the pre-release events so much bigger.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I I did appreciate that. So I think it, I think it lowers the threshold for entry. Right. And then the final action would be the you broke my smolder.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. The action doc.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I'm so I'm so sad they printed a dock essentially. I was so excited that doc would be going away. Because inevitably, I mean, I'm scarred from Purple Steel where they dock into a cobra and win the game, right? Um, but I'm sad that they it's necessary in steel because it's not like there's not a lot of card draw in steel. Right. But at least it's not on a body this time, I guess. True. Um, and then and so you can brick on these, and I'm talking about core now, but you can brick on these harder than you can dock, because doc is like, you know, you could still play him as a person or a body that makes for one.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, these would be good for draw in limited.
SPEAKER_03100% sorry, yes, draw there. But I'm just like, why didn't they reprint another doc? Okay, anyways.
SPEAKER_01So then we have two cost characters. So we have the Pocahontas. When you play this character, you may play a character with cost one for free. So if you're deciding to go more low to the ground with your like if your packs are very low to the ground, this would be great because if you're getting basically the grandmother willow effect on two. And so if you're trying to, you know, out-aggro your opponent, this would be a great card for that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, definitely. Mike Wazowski is up next. I love this card. I love it in uh core. Well, I don't like playing against it, but I love playing it in core. And then I think in sealed it's gonna be a menace. It's one way to draw cards. It does help your opponent draw cards too, if they're playing a mainly character package, but oftentimes in sealed, people like to have the actions, the items, locations, maybe. And so there's a lot more chances to miss. If you're building an all character deck, Mike Wazowski will make it even more threatening.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. There's also just a bunch of generic two drops. Yes, right. There are two drops that are two twos, the quest for two. Yeah. And honestly, like there's so many of them that it would be something that you would want to have uh pop probably be a good two drop to have at least one of them in your deck, just because it is a good stat line and you'll be able to quest for two at least once.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01To keep that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think uh that's like a really good staple to have is to look for the two drops, two twos that quest for two, or even three drops that quest for two. Yeah. Just because it it helps you get to the end of the game. Right.
SPEAKER_01We didn't mention it when we were doing our pre-talk, but more two drop. And I just was like, because there are so many shift characters in this.
SPEAKER_03And sealed specifically is good because morph can be anybody shift target. Yeah. He's just a little, he's just a little guy. And then we have Kevin.
SPEAKER_00I love Kevin.
SPEAKER_01Kevin's a girl.
SPEAKER_00Kevin's a girl. Kevin's a girl.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, so Kevin, first of all, Daryl and I just watched Up. Daryl hadn't seen Up, so we watched Up recently, and we had to wat we had to watch it in pieces because of how emotional it was. Yeah. But he but he really liked it and was also surprised that Kevin. It was a girl. So I thought I thought it was pretty good.
SPEAKER_03I like this card a lot, but I caution people on any cards that make you lose momentum. Yeah. Because with sealed, there isn't like as many catch-up mechanics or ways to stall your opponent out. And so I think Kevin is like a a win condition card, not necessarily a two-drop because you don't want to keep drawing the two drop over and over again. You couldn't end up inking it too. You crush with it once and then you get your next turn. That's totally fair. Yeah. So that's why I'm thinking like, I don't think it's a card that you would want to play over and over and over again. But it's a fun card. Yeah. I definitely would consider it. Yeah. And that's just my opinion, too, right? What about it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I totally don't agree. Don't I agree with you? You're wrong. That's why. No.
SPEAKER_02And that's why everybody has their opinion on cards.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. When we're talking about evasives, we have the Randall bogs evasive three-one. Well, all the cards in your inkwall are exerted. This character gains two lore pips. Oh yeah. So he can be it, he can quest for three if you've exerted all your ink.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And we we'll talk about the other Randall later, but I just noticed because we're talking about it now. I'm like the Randall is all about having your inkwell exerted. It's so interesting. I like that a lot. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's because he's missing ink because he can blend it. Go, go.
SPEAKER_03Maybe, maybe. Or or not.
SPEAKER_01There are other cards that have to, you have to have exerted.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Well, I I always push for, like we talk about curve, right? You always want to have a good curve and you want to use your ink efficiently. So you want to have enough cards in like the one to I say like five in sealed, honestly, that like allow you to exert your ink well all the time. Right. Because if you're playing like a two-drop on turn four, and that's the only card you're playing, it's not a good, it's not good momentum in the sealed, especially. And it's not in constructed either. Um, but for sealed, you want to look at that curve that you can fill out as and use your ink as efficiently as possible. So I really like that Randall. Because if you're doing that, you're getting two more. So next we have Violet. Yeah, I added this to the list because Violet is again that dream of having the shift target, but also resist in sealed, especially, is just really good. She's a 3-2, essentially a 3-3 with the resist. Um, and I think that will help a lot because there's a lot of like two strength characters, and I think that will help.
SPEAKER_01No, I I I I like resist in limited. I don't like it when I'm playing in core.
SPEAKER_03It depends on you know what you're playing, but resist and core is just less powerful.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And so we're gonna talk about a few actions. Like we're not quite action heavy in what we have with limited, but look what you've done, deal two damage to a chosen character. And during your turn, when you discard this card, you may play it from your discard. So this has that reciprocal effect of if you played it on two, or you could play it and then it's adjusting your discard, or if you played it later in the game, you could play it twice. Yeah. Right. So that's the ability to have like multiple instances of damage.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Is it a card that when you play it, it's considered discard? So if you have like four ink, you could play it, it's going to your discard, then you can play it that's yeah, I didn't think about that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so that that's why that's part of why I was like, this is really good because it's reciprocal damage. Um you would you have to be able to pay for it. But yeah, of course. There are a few cards that have that ability in this set.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I really like that they're kind of making the discard more a part of the game versus like it's already there, you know. Yeah. And and uh in steel too, you have the Kronk that you can, it was a meat hut cook. Yes, that you can pay one to loot. Looting is looking at the top of your card and deciding whether you want to keep it or put it in your discard, or sometimes even at the bottom. But essentially anything that lets you filter through your deck is always really good. Right. Um that's uh one opportunity to get rid of or to discard the look what you've done.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And then at so like ones and two drops, when we're when we're thinking about limited play, is you don't actually want your deck to be like overly heavy that direction, right? You want your the main part of your deck to be three, four, five, uh like in the meat of it. So you want so when we're talking about that, just keep that in mind is you will be overpowered if you don't include some of the bigger bodies that are a three, four, and five. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Or how fast you want to go. Because like you said, with the Pocahontas, if you want to drop a lot and just get there before your opponents can get out, but that strategy is not consistent, right? Will have answers, people will be able to remove things from your board. So I think, like you said, having later game plans for how to finish the game is also really important.
SPEAKER_01So speaking of moving to a higher part of the curve, so we have the three cost, and three cost characters are generally very strong, and we have a lot that have lots of abilities in this set, but it's about choosing abil choosing cards that are gonna be good in limited. Like some of these cards are just not great in limited, so that that's something to keep in mind. So one of them is Maylin Lee, right? So the Maylan three cost Maylon Lee is good and limited only because of how many Ruby pandas Ruby pandas, red pandas, red pandas and songs there are. So if you don't open any other red pandas or songs, yeah, don't put her in your deck.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, so like that it is so she is dependent on that. And her stat line is not good enough for her to not be utilized for her ability. Yeah. Uh so keep that in mind. But if you did pull a bunch, because there are a lot of red panda and song in this set, then she would be good card draw.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um, I mean, another one is like similar note, Kangah, he's a s uh she's a singer five. And like, if you don't like to put her in, but if you end up drawing a lot of songs that you're like, I really want to use these songs, she might be a good addition to the deck as well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And then the Ruby Boo, uh, we love a good rush character, and her ability is very interesting because if she challenges a character with three attack or less, she doesn't take any damage.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the card is just also really cute.
SPEAKER_01She's so cute, so cute. And I mean, I I try not to only pick Ruby characters when I'm clicking, like when we're going through these, but you know, she is Ruby and she's like the epitome of Ruby.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Right? With rush and challenge, challenging and all of that. So and adorable. Speaking of the Ruby characters, though, I love Splatoy Head and only because he's an experiment. But not really. He he's a three cost three three quests for two. So just a decent body. Yeah. But the art on this card is fantastic. I have said this, I think probably every set, but part of my favorite parts of looking at the art of Lorcana is seeing the motion in the art.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so like I really liked it when you could see the motion of like Goofy flying through the air and things like that. So I really like the the motion of the fire. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So the art's definitely really cool. What about items? Weed whacker. The weed whacker. I think generically being able to give a character challenger plus two is uh is pretty good. And then there's also like bigger vinyling characters. So in a pinch, you can just banish a vinyling character. So I think any kind of removal in sealed is pretty precious. Like I wouldn't play this in a core deck, but in sealed, having removal is rare and harder to come by. So I think this is a good consideration for sealed.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. We might need more challenging, additional challenger characters if these omni droids are gonna be a problem.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I mean, but in core you have like world's greatest if you're in Amber. This is fair. This is fair. Or the new guest on.
SPEAKER_01Or the new guest on. Yeah, with casting. Also in Amber, yes. And then panic. So panic is a three-cost character. A three-wine with rush. With a rush for two. We love us some rush.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, rush is rush is always fun and limited because people just don't expect it. They know that it exists. I mean, even me, like I know it exists, but I'm still like, well, what am I supposed to do? Not turn my character sideways. So rush is always a surprise and fun to play.
SPEAKER_01Yes. You're not supposed to carry turn your character sideways. I'm supposed to turn my character sideways.
SPEAKER_00Um, all right.
SPEAKER_01Four costs. So forecast, I think, is our longest list. Our four and fives are where we found the most. And there's so many good characters. There's actually like a lot of good limited characters.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah. Um well, and in limited two, like you were mentioning, three, four, five is like really where you're at. Really four and fives. Because once you get to that point, you're you're starting to build, like I keep saying this for you're starting to build momentum and control of the board and board presence. And so that's where you want most of your characters. Like on turn five, you do not want to be drawing one drops. No, no. That is a losing battle. Exactly.
SPEAKER_01Which is why I only ever put like one or two one drops in my whole limited deck. Because I do not want to ever play that game. I'd rather not play something on one.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's interesting. I still try to put at least three or four. I'm in the hopes of having a one-drop because getting that early lore gain before there's anything on the can help. Absolutely. But it's a different, different approaches.
SPEAKER_01Uh, so I love bodyguard in Limited. And this rabbit honey paladin is so great. And if you manage to have other honey characters, he helps boost them with an additional lore pip on turn. But otherwise, he's just a two-five bodyguard. And he has a carrot sword.
SPEAKER_03So cute, yeah. I mean, in two five, like a five health character is not something to sneeze at in this, especially. So it's that's really interesting. I really like uh the put that thing back where it came back. So help me. So healthy, so help me. And scene. And scene. I like that cardinal. It's a thinkable mothers knows best. Yeah. It does cost one more, but I think anything that puts sets your opponent back, like if they spend a turn playing a four cost, and then you are able to put that card back in their hand, that makes them lose a turn.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Especially if you can sing it, right? That would be great. Will you be singing it?
SPEAKER_02Every time I play it, my opponent's gonna be so annoyed with me. Here, take it. I particularly like, I mean, I know it's no genie with card draw, but at least it is evasive and it does quest for two. Um, and I think that Jasmine is a good option as well because it does give you some card draw. It does give your opponent card draw as well, but you know, it's not a bad thing to have an extra card in your hand.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And then uh narrow escape is returning up to two chosen characters, items or locations with cost two or less to each other players' hands. So this is in that case, like you have you're playing against someone that's playing an aggro type. Yeah, right. Yeah, you can also play this on yourself. That's true. Yeah, and then you have things to ink, etc., or replay, um, depending on how it is. So I like the variety because it doesn't have to be like it doesn't have to be opposing character. It is a four-cost action, though. So that is one of those things where it's it's it's a high action cost for what it does, but it has removed two things, and so that I think that's why it's there. It's also inkable, and we love inkable utility cards. Yeah, definitely. It gets you out of a pinch if you need to. For sure, for sure. Speaking of a card that I'm not sure how it's gonna do, Source of the Vine. I have played against it in some playtesting in terms of like how it's been played in real decks, right? In constructed decks, and it's a menace. Yeah. But I'm not quite sure how it's gonna do in limiting.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it it might be like if you draw it, could potentially be helpful because there's not a lot of ways to gain to have a lot of ink on the board. And so your opponent, instead of questing, would have to either give you lore or they they take a turn off to qu to quest, right? Um and so I think that would be helpful for the decks that are trying to go fast, similar to how it would be in core as well.
SPEAKER_01There's not a lot of removal in this set, but red alert would be a direct removal with the banished chosen character with three attack or less. And if you have a monster character in play, chosen opponent loses one lore. So it's a possibility you'll have a monster in play. Um, but if anything, there's definitely gonna be a character with three attack or less on the board.
SPEAKER_03For sure. Yeah, I I'm not convinced that red alert is will be good in core, but I think people are playing it because it's inkable. But I think in sealed, any kind of removal is is a good consideration for your death. And then we have the Randall bogs in blue, that's a four cost. And he says when you play this character, you may put a card into your inkwell, even though I just said you can't have really a card that you you know ramped with. But at the end of your turn, if all cards in your inkwell are exerted, you gain a lore. So again, just rewarding you for having efficient like curve. Use of your ink.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. And this one is funny. So the Merlin envisioning the future. Oh, yeah. Yes. I think it's a silly card. Um that's so fun. It is very fun. But you when you play this character, you may draw a card from the bottom of your deck. And so it's just like a little trickery. Um, it is card draw. And I don't know if there's any other cards in this set that put cards on the bottom of your deck.
SPEAKER_03I think there's some. I remember seeing like an item or an action that said put your opponent's card or chosen card into the character's bottom of their deck. Okay, okay. Um but it's not, I don't think it's that great and sealed or constructed, honestly.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And also this, when this character is banished, put this card from your discard on the bottom of your deck. So you could possibly draw another Merlin if you ended up. Merlin into a Merlin thing.
SPEAKER_03It is uninkable though. So I think that's something that especially in Limited, where you don't have the looting, you don't have the way to filter as much as consistently, you do need to be really careful about the number of uninkables you throw into your deck. I've had that happen before where I will just break on a lot of uninkables because they're just fun cards to play, and then you're just sitting there for several turns doing nothing, which is a surefire way to let your opponent run away with the game. Yes.
SPEAKER_01And then our last card from actually we have a few more, uh, Megavolt. So he's a pretty solid card when it comes to limited play. Yeah. So electrical menace. He's a one-four request for three. Well, you have no cards in your hand. This character gains resist two. So he's great later in the game when you're top decking as part of limited. Use oftentimes you're top decking, but then he would be essentially a one-sixth.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's pretty hard to get rid of unless you have red alert. Right.
SPEAKER_01Unless you have red alert, exactly. Or if you rush at it with a boo.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Not a boo. A boo. Make sure you have that just boo.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01And then the closet door portal.
SPEAKER_02What does that card do? So this item enters play exerted, and then who's there? Um, exert and ink two. Look at the top three cards of your deck. You may reveal a character item or location card with cost six or less and play it for free. Put the rest on the bottom of your deck in any order. Put this card into your inkwell face down and exert it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So a little bit of ramp, a little bit of getting to play bigger bodies sooner. Yeah, which is always good when you can drop a big booty earlier in the game. Everybody loves big booty. Everybody loves big booty.
SPEAKER_01All right. Five casts. No. Shoots like guest on. So we have guest on superior archer. Let me just say uh my husband, who is a mega guest on fan, is loving this card.
SPEAKER_02So I'm sure he is. I'm sure he's on the hunt for all the foils and whatever.
SPEAKER_01He was so sad when this one wasn't an epic. But yeah, uh, yeah, no, uh, we will be finding all the foils of this card.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Well, and he's another situational because there's only a few support characters in the limited version. So the Willows, there's a Pluto that we'll talk about. So if you don't have any characters with support, I don't know if I would put him in because there's not a ton of characters that have five or more attack that will you'll be seeing a ton of, but he is also just a 3-4 body that potentially can do a world's greatest, essentially. Yeah. So I like it.
SPEAKER_01And he's a hundred percent playable in court. Oh, yeah, when you're definitely seeing it. We're gonna see him from sealed in the sealed world, yes. Um, and then Sully bodyguard. I know. So Brittany said another bodyguard character. What? But his ability is when you play this character, you may return a character, a card from your discard for free. Yeah. And so you return a character from to your hand, not for free. But it is for free because it is free. You're just not gonna be able to play it for free. But anything that's allowing you to draw a card even from your discard is immediately playable.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, and this is kind of like the Christmas Landy pipe dream kind of thing. But if you can draw the Soli and then the shift Soli, then you get to like if you if he gets the banished, you get to play the five drops solely under for free. So you can Soli cycle essentially. Yeah, yeah. So that's that that's that is definitely Christmas land. But it's 100% Christmas land, but it could happen. But you are Leslie. I am Leslie. And I do live in Christmas land a lot.
SPEAKER_01And then we have so I love the song I'm never not by your side, but I really don't know how playable it is. It it's just fun and it's her set her face is so cute.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, there's like the different red pandas too like Sun Mi. And I mean, just being able to shift as a five-five that quests for two is I think just really uh Dr. Bush root. I love that card. Also, the art is just so funny, but he also quests for three. Yeah. And he makes you your opponent discard when they challenge, and making your opponent discard in sealed where there is not a lot of draw is very devastating. Um, it does make people hesitate to challenge things like that.
SPEAKER_02It's a bit like Cursed Merfolk. Yes. But it's got a bigger body.
SPEAKER_01Yes. More lore. More lord, yes. Absolutely. And then Lumpy. Um, but he is a he's a three-six. And when you play this character, you may move to two damage from chosen character to chosen opposing character. So three six with a cat effect.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's pretty solid.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, three six is a pretty good uh stat line because I mean, in in the last set, the bashful was also evasive, but I think like three six that quests for two is just literally.
SPEAKER_01Speaking of big bodies, because I I this is this is where I'm like getting I get excited about like so the Colonel Hathy, uh, a five cost five five whenever this character quests, you move him to one of your locations for free. But even if you don't have a location, yeah, like that sound line is really good. And he's not temporary, like the sun, right, the sun yi.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Then you have the dash, so four, four, and you get to look at the top card of your deck. And if you can play it, which is like having one extra card essentially to to look at, and that's really good too. And in Christmas land, you can shift him. Yes.
SPEAKER_01So speaking of Christmas land, we have the Winnie Pooh and Piglet team up card. Yeah. Yeah. Where you can shift it. I mean, you can you can also play it, right? Just outright as a five cost, but this character gets plus one more pip for each different ink type of character you have in play. In Christmas Land, this is a fantastic card. It's not a bad card in Limited, though, because of how many there are playing, right? Yes. Super fun.
SPEAKER_03Um look, another violet. What? Just putting those characters on this list. Yeah, I really like this violet too. The resist is is really good. And then there are a lot of heroes in this set. So odds are when you play her, you will be able to draw a card. And any other hero you play with her on the board, you get to draw a card. So it's uh it's a really good replacement effect.
SPEAKER_01Well, it's uh yeah, it's a draw and discard a card, right? Right. So yeah, yeah, that would be like, oh draw, breast draw.
SPEAKER_03I was like, you do have to discard. You have to discard. But I think it's still good when you do draw those late game one or two drops that you don't really want. You can play something to discard it.
SPEAKER_01Yes, absolutely. And then the Pluto Sapphire Suspicious Sentry, first of all, that's Gowl on his face. But second, he's a 4-4 with support who quest for three. Three. So just very good. I didn't notice that it was Pete behind him. I I love to look at these cards when we're doing this just because it like makes me look at the cards again and again. And I know you love to do the cards a bunch as they get revealed, but just looking at limited cards just helps us. There's so many things you see too in the background, and just you appreciate the art so much.
SPEAKER_03The details, yeah, that's really good.
SPEAKER_01Okay, y'all. I know you're shocked. I we're on sixth class now. Uh-huh. And the first sixth class card I found that I really liked was a bodyguard. Oh my goodness. Uh so Coco has a bodyguard at four six who quests for three. Which is ridiculous, by the way. So, yeah, but honestly, if you in Magical Christmas land uh were able to pull the legendary Merida, oh, and you played all these bodyguards. There you go. Card draw.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, card draw. I was thinking you were going with the item that then you can play this for free, or not for free for two. Yes. And then also ramp yourself. Because I live in the world of ramp, even though ramp is gone. But it's just different. It's different. It's just not on two. It's gone because I always have bad luck with uninkables, and all the ramp is now uninkable. So I think I'm done with ramp. I'll say that and then go back to blurble again next week.
SPEAKER_01I was like, if you're gonna still find a way to do it. I always do. We're just gonna play tempo blurble. I'm not gonna play it with ramp. Um now, one of these cards I've been loving in constructed like play as I'm doing play testing is the Peter Pan and Tinkerbell shift. So fun.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Having everything be space safe. Yeah, I can't imagine how you deal with that in limited specifically.
SPEAKER_01Um, because it's hard enough in core constructed. Yeah, and there's honestly not a lot of cards in here that can handle it other than the Gaston. Yes, right. So Gaston would be a good counter. And then there's only a few characters with alert, too. So I guess if they're also playing the shift Peter Brennan and Tinkerbell, right? Like you can have that play. But yeah, no, in all honesty, I think evasives is gonna be a menaceful.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, especially if you do pull the Peter Pan and Tinkerbell, because there is a shift target for the Peter Pan, and then it's it's just hard to deal with. Yeah. When when your whole opponent's board is evasive and limited, it's really difficult. But I also like that they printed a six-draw Hades with Ward. Um, he quests for three and is a five-five. And I think that's a pretty good bomb.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, for sure. Um is a menace. I I don't have nice things to say about Ward unless I'm like. Um yeah, and then with a few good friends is such an interesting card because it's a sing together six, and chosen player draws a card for each different ink type of characters you have in play. So you're most likely going to choose yourself, and you could be drawing a bunch of cards.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so me, the poo, and piglet for cards. Some versions at the lore game. Yeah, yeah. I like that a lot, especially like you said, in limited, because you are likely to have a lot of colors on the board.
SPEAKER_01And then there's just some really decent bodies at six, right? You have the Winifred, you have the Cetus, both of those are big emerald cards. One's a six, seven, who quests for two, one's a six six, who quests for two with Ward. Just kind of wild. And you have the Carl and Russell shift.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And Sully and Boo. Sully and Sully and Boo.
SPEAKER_03You gotta live in Christmas land.
SPEAKER_01You've got to live. A little bit. A little bit. A little bit of the time. Now, I feel like the Sully and Boo is only like really good if you shifted it. Yes. Yeah, I agree. Right? Like it's not great. Like it's not, it's it's a big body without it, but it's mostly great when you have it shifted.
SPEAKER_03But hear me out. You have the three-drop boo, and then you have the and then you have the five-drop Sully, and then you shift it, and you challenge, and he gets damaged, and you get to play both of them for free.
SPEAKER_02In Christmas Land.
SPEAKER_03In Christmas Land. I'm still gonna try and pull this off, and if I do, I'll have to report back to you guys.
SPEAKER_01So that next week we're gonna have some really magical Christmas Land scales to say all about our limited play journeys over the weekend.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I really enjoy limited because you get to do sillier stuff like that. You know, yeah. I mean, we we do have fun, obviously, playing core constructed, but we as we get more competitive as players and as a team, I feel like there's less room for the fun, silly, like can be more relaxed. Yeah, exactly. So that's another reason why I love sealed so much. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Everybody's learning, everybody's getting used to the new mechanics and the characters and how they work together. So I agree with you.
SPEAKER_01It's not so serious, it's not so serious, except for when you want to win.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's true. I mean, we're competitive in general, so we always have to. I was like, I still like in sealed, I'm more likely to be like, I want to win, but with this really weird combo that nobody's gonna see coming.
SPEAKER_01I want to win, but my win con is having Peter Payne on the board.
SPEAKER_03Yes, yes. My win con will be shifting sully and getting to sully cycle. Bring a lucky rabbit's foot or like those over. I don't know. Well, we'll be doing a 2v2 sealed at gamers guild. And so when you and your partner have more packs to pull from, you're more likely to be able to build those kind of combos. And you have another person there to help control the board until you can build those kinds of combos. So I do like the 2v2 format. Yeah, but it's not popular.
SPEAKER_01Excited to do that again, too. Yeah. So, anyways, okay. So now we're getting into that harder to choose, like right, up until six. It's definitely like it's reasonable that you're gonna get to six. Yeah, yeah. Past that, seven and above is really hard to justify some of the cost, right? Now we have potato shift. Potato Posey. Posey is a seven cost, potato shift five, seven, eight requests for two in magical Christmas land. This is this is really in hilarious. This is one of my win cons because I thought this was so funny. Yes, very painful. Um, and so I want to do this one, and that's why that's the only reason. It's because it's because it's funny, is why I want to do it. Potato. Yes, I'm gonna play a potato.
SPEAKER_02Potato.
SPEAKER_01You're like, what are you gonna do with it?
SPEAKER_02It's just gonna sit there and potato.
SPEAKER_03Just potato things, don't worry about it. But yeah, there's in the seven drops, there's like the dark queen duck and launch pad, um, the left sent Diablo, um, there's the mini Mickey, so there's and Woody and Buzz, of course. So there's and yes, Woody and Buzz, sorry. So there's so many good shit. And I think that it'll be a little bit more viable because you can play morph if you draw that in sealed, but I wouldn't count on that being your strategy, right? Exactly.
SPEAKER_01Yep. But we we're talking about how there's not as much like removal in this set, but there is a removal song.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yes.
SPEAKER_01And it is a sing together, which is really great. Um but it is uninkable seven cost. So um, we do have some several singers in this set to help you get to that card. Um, but only if you have those singers should you probably play that card.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and also just remembering that it's sealed, so it's not gonna be as consistent, right? So when you put one ofs and a lot of one ofs in decks, which is usually what happens in sealed, you might see cards that you think are good, but show up at the wrong time. Or and especially having a seven cost uninkable, it could break your hand essentially. Yeah. And so it's that balance again of finding, you know, what to put in, what to take out, what to not include, which is for me, I have learned my lesson. I am very cautious about uninkables in my deck when I build sealed because there's just no way to make your hand less or more playable if you're on a bunch of uninkables in sealed.
SPEAKER_01So yeah. So when you're playing those bigger characters, looking for the ink ability is definitely where you want to go. Like if you want to play the vine and play Attack of the Vine, right? Yeah, uh, you want to make sure that you're having um if the fact that it's a 10 cot 10 cost card, yeah. Is the only reason you'd ever want to put it in your deck is because it's inkable.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. Yeah, because like I know you probably want to really play the bell and beast, but it's a definitely want to play it, which would be really, really hard to make work consistently in a sealed deck.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well, especially since like there's just not as many targets for the the that card either. So like that would be the other part of it.
SPEAKER_03I mean, there is that bell that lets you pay one less to shift onto something, but yeah, it's uh it's but again a lot to hope for.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, again, magical Christmas. And I I I want to just open it as an iconic and then just go home. Right.
SPEAKER_03Immediately leave an event if you open iconic Bell and Beast.
SPEAKER_01You know what? No, I'll probably still play, but I would be like, I don't care if I win or lose now. Yeah, you already want us. I mean, I would still want to win just because of who I am. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I mean, luckily a lot of the big seven and eights are inkable. So if you have shift targets, if you have, you know, a lot of ways to get that character out, it's not a bad thing to have in your deck because those bigger characters are harder to deal with. But having too many of those with not enough shift targets or enough control of the early game can also just make you sit there and do nothing for a long time. Right. For sure.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, as you're building, just remember you're building a 40 card deck. And then you want to make sure that you're having a curve, just a few one drops, a few two drops, unless your strategy is to just run super low to the ground. But then really focus in on those three, fours, and fives, and then have a few six drops, seven drops, eight drops, depending on ink ability. Yeah. And whatever combos you end up pulling. Don't ever expect to play tribal or be able to play a theme deck. It is fun and it it is more likely to happen with certain types of cards, but it's not something you should expect when you're drawing, right? You can't expect to play a constructed deck.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think a lot of people who are new to Sealed will go in having researched the cards, you're looking them over, be like, okay, this is what I'm gonna build, but you don't know what you're gonna get.
SPEAKER_02It's like a box of chocolates.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, you want to have that versatility, you want to be adaptable and look at what cards you have in front of you and use bread to prioritize the cards you want to pull, look at your uninkable numbers and so on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, try to keep your uninkables under eight, like five to eight should be your range or lower if if you can. Um, and just make sure that you're uh playing well, bring sleeves. Yeah, you will get a deck box, you will get dice because they come with the box, right? They come all together, but you will need sleeves.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, some people play not sleeved, but if you those people are wrong.
SPEAKER_02It's not easy to shuffle your cards without sleeves. I know. At least for me. Like those those people are wrong.
SPEAKER_03Clap take, clap take. Um, no, I I mean I always play with sleeves, but there is something to be said about people who just play with their cards. Uh yeah, I know, especially with like being potentially pulling an enchanted or an iconic or anything that's shiny. I definitely would suggest bringing sleeves, even if you don't end up playing with them. Bring a sleeve for the shinies. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. No, I will be bringing sleeves and top loaders and like I'm gonna be manifesting. I'm gonna be wearing a bell dress. Like I am Wow, you're manifesting so hard.
SPEAKER_02We will be hoping alongside you that pull it. Yes. And Leslie's gonna be dreaming of Christmas land. Yeah, yeah. With that, everyone.
SPEAKER_01Uh this was a little bit of a longer of an episode, and we wanted to talk about a few more things besides limited play, but we'll have to talk about that next time. Happy questing.
SPEAKER_00Happy questing.
